I will say this might hit harder or make more sense behind the movie but standalone its weirdo tunes. This could have been predicted, he did the mainstream rap thing, he did the petty “someone says I couldn’t make this type of music” genre changes, and has put together a vast bag, but people forget he’s very out there, you can tell by how he dresses. This is him just putting out some stuff that he wants to hear, but as “Childish Gambino”. The quality is here, the strange sonics, and the range is here but it’s definitely not the send off fans would want or expected from the Childish we all used to want to make it in that J. Cole, Drake and Kendrick window but it also just feels like stuff he was messing around with and loving just by himself and put it out, but with a movie. I know his playlists are extremely abstract with global tracks and such all over. This feels more like a mash of just ideas, genres and such from someone who has chosen to be out of touch but just loves the discovery of music or aggressively using shuffle on their collection. If you are a weirdo like me you will rock with a few tracks. Overall tho I would wait to watch the movie.
